Monitor, Adjust, and Improve Your Energy

As more and more businesses look to data analytics for energy solutions, we’ve seen increased interest in the Pepco Energy Savings for Business Program, specifically the Monitoring-Based Commissioning (MBCx) Program. MBCx is a first-of-its-kind, data-driven incentive program designed to optimize the performance of a facility’s equipment and systems by focusing on low- and no-cost energy efficiency measures.

Pepco’s MBCx Program provides Maryland business customers with a pathway to energy savings through “internet of things” infrastructure to detect the best opportunities for energy savings and improvements for buildings. Typical MBCx projects go through three phases—installation, monitoring, and implementation—with the goal to resolve operating issues. This is done by calibrating equipment, improving occupant comfort with proper temperature set points, and optimizing energy use in an existing building.

Using virtual sub-metering modules and the customer’s utility rate schedule, approved service providers analyze the energy usage versus hours of operation. Program incentives are then paid to participants on a $/kWh-saved basis and can include an additional $0.04/square foot, if an ASHRAE Level 2 audit is performed at the facility. Participants use these financial incentives to offset capital investments while gaining a distinct advantage in identifying potential energy- and cost-saving measures.
